Maní
Maní is a mythological figure in the Tupi-Guarani culture, whose tale is widespread across South America.
Legend has it Maní was born as pale as the moon, much to her family and tribe’s surprise. They feared she was sick, or cursed, but her grandfather the chief foresaw in dreams Maní was a gift from the spirits.
It is said her kind and gentle spirit earned the love of all people she met, and the forest itself.
But the girl’s life turned out to be short…
In some versions, she died a baby, in others a young child.
Heart-broken, her family buries Maní within a cerimonial hut - an Oca -and from her grave, a new and mysterious plant with massive roots sprouted.
The when opened, the roots revealed a white core, just like the young Maní’s skin and hair.
This plant born within Maní’s Oca was quickly named “manioca”and it became a staple food for the Tupi-people across South America.
